Consistency Is the Practice

There’s a fantasy about meditation that goes something like this: if you sit long enough and practice hard enough, you will eventually have a breakthrough. A moment of clarity or stillness or insight so profound that everything changes. And then you’ll be different — more peaceful, more present, more fully yourself.

This is not entirely wrong. But it’s wrong in the ways that matter most.

The problem with peak experiences

Profound experiences in meditation do happen. People report moments of expansive calm, of deep clarity, of feeling genuinely released from something they’ve been carrying. These are real.

The problem is building your practice around them. If transcendence is the goal, then every ordinary session — every sit in which nothing much happens except your mind wandering and you returning — becomes a failure. And most sessions are ordinary.

Building a meditation practice on the pursuit of peak experiences is like building an exercise habit on the expectation of a runner’s high every time. You’ll quit. There isn’t a runner’s high every time.

What ordinary sessions do

The unremarkable sessions are, in fact, doing the work.

Each time you sit — even when it’s dull, even when your mind is scattered, even when you glance at the timer twice a minute — you are reinforcing the habit. You are training the neural pathways. You are showing up.

The benefits of meditation don’t come from the peak moments. They come from the compound interest of hundreds of ordinary moments, accumulated quietly over months and years.

A more useful goal

Instead of meditating to feel something, try meditating to show up. Five minutes, every morning, no matter what. Not five perfect minutes — five real ones, which means sometimes five messy, distracted, fidgety minutes.

The meditation teacher Shinzen Young has a formula: suffering = pain × resistance. The practice reduces the resistance. The ordinary sessions are where that happens, slowly and without fanfare.

Keep sitting. It’s working even when it doesn’t feel like it.
