You Don't Have to Enjoy Meditation

People quit meditation because they don’t enjoy it. And then they feel guilty about not enjoying it, because meditation is supposed to be peaceful and calming and restorative, and if they’re not experiencing any of those things, something must be wrong with them.

Nothing is wrong with them. Meditation is often not enjoyable. This is normal.

What meditation sessions are actually like

Many sessions involve sustained mental restlessness. The mind that will not settle. The ten minutes that feel like forty. The intrusive thought that returns seventeen times. The itch in the exact center of your back. The growing conviction that you are uniquely bad at this.

Some sessions involve nothing particularly distinctive — not pleasant, not unpleasant, just the quiet tedium of sitting there being a person.

Occasionally, there are sessions that feel genuinely good: clear, calm, present. These happen. They are not the norm.

What matters instead of enjoyment

The benefits of meditation practice are not delivered session by session. They accumulate, gradually and mostly invisibly, over months and years of consistent practice. You don’t notice them happening any more than you notice your hair growing.

What you do notice, eventually, is a retrospective difference. You react a little less automatically than you used to. Difficult emotions pass a little faster. You catch yourself in a spiral a little sooner.

This is not dramatic. It’s not a transformation you can point to on a Tuesday. But it’s real, and it comes from the sessions that weren’t enjoyable, just as much as from the sessions that were.

The analogy that holds up

No one goes to the gym expecting to enjoy every rep. No one brushes their teeth because it’s a peak experience. These are habits maintained because of what they produce over time, not because each individual instance is rewarding.

Meditation is the same category of thing.

Do it anyway. Not because you enjoy it today, but because of what you’ll have in six months if you keep showing up.
